  1. 1905-1988. Sierra Leone politician, president
  2. 1971-85. He was the leader of the moderate
  3. left-wing All People's Congress (APC), from
  4. 1978 the country's only legal political
  5. party. Stevens was a policeman, industrial
  6. worker, and trade unionist before founding
  7. the APC. He became prime minister in 1968 and
  8. in 1971, under a revised constitution, became
  9. Sierra Leone's first president. He created a
  10. one-party state based on the APC, and
  11. remained in power until his retirement at the
  12. age of 80.
